Future Pandemic
Management

This research priority area addresses the issue of resilience within our healthcare system.

We’re analysing how different countries responded to the last pandemic — what worked, what didn’t — and using those lessons to shape smarter, more effective strategies for the future.

Respiratory pathogens spread quickly in cities, where people live in close proximity. That’s why we include urban infrastructure in our research. Effective pandemic management means defining healthy living conditions, improving risk strategies, and finding secure, decentralised ways to link health data.

Our goal: practical guidelines to ensure healthcare systems are prepared and well-resourced for future crises.

A key challenge, for example, during any pandemic is resource distribution. Who gets what and when? By simulating potential measures in advance, we can uncover and address weaknesses in the system before a crisis hits.

We can only overcome future challenges by balancing conflicting interests both at the national and international levels. A pandemic treaty can help coordinate and align efforts across borders. We aim to identify key issues, such as patent protection, biodiversity, and access We aim to identify key issues — such as patent protection, biodiversity, and access to medical procedures — and develop proposals that support fair and effective implementation.

Our working packages

08

Developing guidelines for pandemic-resilient urban spaces and national health systems, while identifying factors that strengthen or weaken resilience through international comparison (ARL, RWI)

09

Creating efficient market designs for scarce pandemic resources and developing statistical methods to integrate decentralized health databases in a data-protection-compliant and effective way (DIW)

10

dentifying key elements for regulation in a global pandemic treaty and crafting a discourse-ethics-based strategy to facilitate agreement on an enforceable treaty (IfW, PRIF)
