Pandemic-
-Resilient
Education  Systems

This research priority area is geared toward creating a robust educational landscape so that both students and teachers alike are better prepared for future pandemics.

Our goal is to design an educational system in such a way that not only makes learning possible in times of crisis, but also priorities the physical and mental health of all.

For the “Pandemic-Resilient Education Systems” focal area, we are developing strategies to keep education running — even during pandemics. A strong digital infrastructure is key. It must support remote learning when schools and daycare centers are closed. But digital tools alone are not enough. Educational buildings must be designed to reduce infection risks. This allows them to stay open safely during outbreaks. We are working closely with federal, state, and local authorities to support schools and childcare facilities.

While physical health cannot be compromised, mental health also should not be forgotten. We cannot leave our children and young people in isolation. For this reason, we are developing psychosocial support systems to strengthen their well - being. Our overarching goal: empower teachers, build learner resilience, and protect education in times of crisis.

Finally, the educational content itself is a key aspect. We need to address the topic of pandemics comprehensively in the classroom. Knowledge about infections, how they spread, and how to combat them will help us to potentially fight a future pandemic at its very outset.
